Writing marketing materials for your business |
 |
Starting a business presents businessmen and entrepreneurs many challenges. All aspects of the business presents their own unique obstacles.
For most businessmen, one of the harder challenges to face is producing marketing materials. Unfortunately speaking and writing it down are two different skills. The most articulate businessman who can confidently speak to clients about the products and services he offers may not necessarily be able to bring that kind of confidence and articulateness when he starts putting all down on paper. The most eloquent speaker could fumble his words the moment he is faced with a pen and a piece of paper.
However, even these things can be remedied. Below are some tips that can help you write better marketing materials:
Plan your copy
Before you get confused, copy refers to the words that will appear in your marketing collaterals. Before you even start to write a single word or commit anything to paper you should ask yourself these questions to help you get a clear picture of what you need:
Who is the target market?
What tone of writing would be effective for this market?
What action would you expect the target market to do after they have read the copy?
What benefits will they gain from the products or services that I am offering?
Where is the information going to appear?
The answers to these questions will help guide you through writing the copy. This will ensure that you don’t wander off when writing, remaining focused on your goals and message.
Write the copy
You should think about the sections of copy that you will need for your draft even before you start writing.
For example, if you are going to write a four-page brochure for your real estate business, you may decide to include the following information in your planned sections:
Introduction
Company background
Services and products
Selling points of your company (what makes you different from competitors)
Major clients
Testimonials
Contact details
Splitting copy into sections helps make sure that you do not leave any important information out. It is also an old writer’s trick to make writing a little easier.
Edit your copy
The process of writing copy does not end when you finish the draft. You should continually work on your draft until it is ready to be printed. Editing your copy would ensure that your marketing material is effective in bringing its message to its audience. Below are some of the things you should watch out for when editing your copy:
Remove jargons, clichés
Edit any sentence that sound stilted or awkward
Check spelling, especially people’s name
Make sure that you have a clear message and definite call to action
Add headlines if your copy is too long
